How do I upgrade to the latest version of Project Recon?
Current customers can email us to download the latest version. We send out email updates to everyone upon major upgrades.
Can I download a free trial of Project Recon?
Currently we do not have a trial version of Project Recon available.
Will upgrading to newer versions be free?
Minor upgrades (e.g. from 1.0 to 1.1) will be free. Major upgrades (e.g. from
1.3 to 2.0) will be offered at a discount of the full product price.
Our philosophy is to release early and release often, which results in
a significant number of minor upgrades between major versions. We hope
to make the major version upgrades well worth the cost.
Why are you charging a fee?
We thought a small fee was reasonable for a little widget that is a consistent time-saver. We hope that it will
be useful to enough people that it will support itself financially and spur on its own development.
Technical Issues

I'm getting a 12002 error. What does that mean?
This usually indicates that Basecamp is temporarily down for maintenance. Try again later. We are aware of a 12002 error issue with Windows 7. We’re working on a fix and hope to have it finalized and shipped in the February Newsletter. In the meantime if you're experiencing this error, please email us and we can send you a link to v1.9.
I'm having trouble logging on. What do I do?
Check that API Access is Enabled on your Basecamp account, then check other common problems listed at the bottom of the Enable API Access page.
If you've already logged into Project Recon but need to change your login details, close Project Recon, right-click the Project Recon icon in your system
tray (lower right hand corner of your screen), and click "Re-Login". Enter your Basecamp credentials.
What should I do for an "Error 403: Forbidden" error?
The most probable cause of a 403 error (especially in the Login dialog) is that you haven't enabled API Access. Project Recon used to suggest this and show a link to more information, but Basecamp slightly changed their error codes, so I'll need to update Project Recon's list of error messages.
I am receiving a "not responding" error, what should I do?
If you see a "Not Responding" message (see screenshot below), check if your firewall or antivirus software has opened a separate window, asking whether to allow Project Recon to access the internet.
What should I do for an "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled" error?
This is an annoying, tough-to-debug generic error message. The first thing to check is that the .Net Framework 1.1 is installed (Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, and look down the list for “Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1”). You might want to try reinstalling it, as a corrupt installation is a common cause of the “exception that could not be handled” error.
Why can't I login with SSL?
In order to get Project Recon to work with SSL, you'll need a Plus, Premium or Max Basecamp account and will need to turn on SSL in your Basecamp Settings (the last option at the bottom of your Settings tab if you are the Basecamp account owner):
